Eighties Fashion Style: Bring Back Stripes!

October 30, 2009

Striped ShirtsIf there is one single fashion item that sums up how to look effortlessly stylish with minimal effort, it must surely be the Breton top.

The navy and white stripes were first brought to the fashion world by Coco Chanel back in the Twenties after she noticed French fishermen’s striped attire, and since then gamine fashion icon Audrey Hepburn and sex kitten Bridget Bardot have shown how the look can be elegant, modern and sexy — whatever the era.

Today, those stripes are back with a vengeance, not just in jersey tops, but also on knitwear and even dresses.

We were overwhelmed by the sheer number of Breton garments on the capital’s streets this week.

Now that we are having an Eighties revival, they are a great way to hark back to the time when Jean Paul Gaultier brought them to the forefront of fashion.

And what better way to recessionproof your wardrobe than by investing in timeless perennials?

Even the most frugal of penny-pinchers won’t regret buying such a classic — the brilliantly simple yet eternally chic striped option will give seasons of wear.

If you like to keep with the nautical look, dress like our Street Style girl Lizzy Black (see right) who paired her Breton top with high-waist, wideleg sailor pants and skinny belt.

Or if you prefer to keep things even simpler, team your Breton with skinny jeans and pumps, for an authentic Chanel look.

Alternatively, clash your stripes with other prints for a quirky mix, or with bold block colours to liven things up a bit. Primary colours work very well with the nautical navy and white stripes.

Giorgio Armani – Ready To Pass The Baton

October 29, 2009

Giorgio Armani DesignsGiorgio Armani founded his company in 1975, and it appears he may be ready to pass the baton.

The 75-year-old designer, who hosted a cocktail party at Moscow’s GUM department store last night, is finally talking about his succession, reports WWD.

“I understand that eventually I will have to pass things on. I am already organizing an entire team around me who understands what I do and will be, at some point, ready to step in and continue what I do,” Armani told reporters in Moscow yesterday, according to the site.

The always put-together designer seemed ageless until he suffered a bout of hepatitis this past summer. Now the fashion industry is abuzz about who will takeover his prestigious post.

Armani may be planning to step down, but he certainly isn’t slipping. The designer just appointed this hot young actress as the new star of his Emporio Armani Underwear campaign.

Rachel Bilsons’ Inspiration

October 28, 2009

Rachel BilsonRachel Bilson has avoided becoming a fashion victim – by taking clothing tips from Ashley Olsen and Sienna Miller. The former The O.C. star launched her own clothing line, Edie Rose, with DKNY Jeans last year. Of course a lot of artist are that fashionable and Ms. Bilson is one of the most stylish star in Hollywood.

However, Bilson admits she still studies the looks of other starlets before stepping out on the red carpet. It’s good to lookup sometimes especially if you’re not sure of what style may suit on you. She tells People.com, “I really look up to a lot of my peers and how they dress. I love to admire other people. Ashley Olsen I think is great, Diane Kruger, Sienna Miller – all those people obviously have good style, so it’s nice to see that around you. Your peers surround you, and they all look good, so that’s great.”

Grace Kelly Fashion Style

October 27, 2009

Grace KellyIn a scene from 1956’s High Society, Grace Kelly wears a white halter swimsuit and pushes a model sailboat into a swimming pool, her head cocked to the side, eyes shining. It’s a serene moment and one that captures the patrician beauty of the Oscar winning actress-turned-princess, who married Prince Rainier III of Monaco that year and left Hollywood to become Princess Grace of Monaco. With her swept-back blonde waves, splash of lipstick, model-perfect face and demure stature, Kelly was a muse to couture houses such as Dior and Givenchy. Kelly died in 1982 at age 52, yet 27 years later she continues to inspire designers with her elegant style. “She has always been on my mind, whether I do ballgowns or wedding dresses. Beauty, but always with a modern twist,” said evening wear designer Reem Acra. “I’m sure, if she was in my era, or her in mine, I could have dressed her. She would have been my muse.”

Kelly will be honoured on Thursday with the Rodeo Drive Walk of Style Award in Beverly Hills, along with French jeweller Cartier. They join past honorees including Manolo Blahnik, Tom Ford, Donatella Versace and Giorgio Armani. The event comes a day after Tommy Hilfiger and his wife Dee chair the Princess Grace Foundation-USA’s Princess Grace Awards Gala in New York City, with awards presented to artists in dance, theatre and film. Hilfiger, who wrote the forward to 2007’s tribute book Grace Kelly: A Life in Pictures, noted how Kelly’s look in High Society broke her out from the pack, exemplified by a cinched-in white wedding dress with sheer, blouse sleeves. It was her last film role before exiting Hollywood to raise her family as a princess, but she had star turns in ’50s Hitchcock movies To Catch a Thief, Rear Window, and Dial M for Murder.” She won a best actress Oscar for Country Girl in 1954.

“She really epitomised American beauty,” said Hilfiger. “Her swimwear was amazing, but her dresses became iconic. She was not only royalty, but she was a mother, down-to-earth, athletic. She loved the outdoors. She had a lot of qualities women aspire to today.” Both Acra and Hilfiger pointed to Kelly’s ability to look put-together without too much effort. That consistency, from a belted skirt suit in Rear Window to a simple, white strapless gown in To Catch a Thief, shows her style staying power, they said. She sometimes showed a hint of attitude, too, added Acra, particularly in a three-quarter sleeve, off-white dress from Rear Window. She wore it with a fur cape and black bag. “Most of what she wore consisted of timeless classics. That’s what we look at for inspiration throughout the years,” said Hilfiger. “Many looks keep coming back to the runway. Her coat dresses, the way she wore prints, the way she wore ballgowns. Even her casual sportswear, wearing gingham, her country club looks.”

Bred in Philadelphia, Kelly always carried herself with a regal air, becoming the namesake for the still sought-after Hermes Kelly bag. But for Hilfiger, who grew up in a small town in upstate New York, her look was hardly the norm – and that’s partly what intrigues him. His spring 2007 collection channelled Kelly with shift dresses paired with scarves. Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera, Zac Posen, Michael Kors, Vera Wang and Ralph Lauren are among the others to cite her as a fashion icon. Acra, who boasts red-carpet credits on Angelina Jolie and Eva Longoria, among others, said she is working on a new Kelly-influenced collection, with dresses and gowns made out of tulle and organza in blush colours and ivory, accessorised by ribbons in green or taupe. Janie Bryant, costume designer for Emmy-winning AMC television show Mad Men, gushed about Kelly’s tea-length wedding gown in High Society, and a later photo of her wearing a boucle suit, standing and watching her children at a swing set.

“It’s so simply beautiful and haunting, in a way,” said Bryant. “She does possess containment, but it’s also propriety. … It’s also about the image of perfection and happiness. People look at her, and see that, whether it’s true and not.” With the show set in the early ’60s, Kelly was the primary influence for the character of Betty Draper, another lithe blonde with impeccably fitted garments. Kelly was a blend of frailty and femininity, Bryant said, but with a mysterious quality. “She was one of the most elegant women in history,” said Hilfiger. “A woman of class and grace, and on top of it, incredible style. She said, ‘I’m a living person, I exist, and my life is real.”‘

LG Fashion Week: Sunny Fong

October 26, 2009

Sunny Fong DesignsUnquestionably the most eagerly awaited show of the spring 2010 edition of LG Fashion Week, which kicks off in Toronto today, is the one that Sunny Fong will present this afternoon at 4.

The most impressive and possibly most popular participant ever to appear on Project Runway Canada – and last spring named the second season’s winner – Fong knows the industry’s eyes are on him and is out to give them something to see.

For the venue, he has settled on the Art Gallery of Ontario’s Walker Court, which, as re-imagined by Frank Gehry, now has a glass ceiling, providing the designer with the natural light he was looking for.

He’s also looking to make sure that the light shines for as many as possible, and so the show is being streamed live at www.vawkcollection.ca.

It’s not surprising that Fong should take advantage of the rage in visual technology – much noticed recently when it was used by Alexander McQueen. After all, Fong studied film before he turned himself over to his primary passion, which is fashion.

His Chinese parents may not have thought of it as a high calling, but Fong, born in Toronto 33 years ago, does. His label is named Vawk, derived from a Sanskrit word for “divine creative activity.”

Production hell was more the name of the game when Fong, who started his business in 2004, tried to handle everything himself. This time, he’s partnered with Ben Barry, motivational entrepreneur, and together they have a two-year plan to take the line to New York.

Meanwhile, Fong’s spring collection – a modest but carefully considered 12 looks – has been inspired by French Polynesia as encountered in the 1935 movie version of Mutiny on the Bounty.

Inspired by Charles Laughton’s Captain Bligh – though far curvier – is a military jacket that is a well-matched contest between fit and peplumed flair.

A demonstration of Fong’s fearless service to the potential of beauty in cloth, there is a dress of silk organza, in a shade of golden skin, that is pleated, tiered and tattooed with appliqués of red and pink chiffon that approximate the contours of hibiscus flowers.

Cosmetics, New Burberry Product

October 24, 2009

Burberry PerfumeBurberry has already successfully dipped their toe in the beauty industry with a dozen or so signature fragrances, but now they’ll be diving in head first with their first line of color cosmetics, set to launch in July of 2010.

According to WWD, Burberry is planning an ambitious launch of about 100 products for eyes, lips and skin. Chairman and managing director of Inter Parfums SA, which has the Burberry beauty license, told WWD that the new collection “gives another dimension to the brand.”

Indeed it does, but other design houses have dabbled in cosmetics and the results have been mixed.

For every designer-makeup success story (Giorgio Armani, Rock & Republic) there are more than a few failures (Versace, Calvin Klein’s many attempts). The jury’s still out on whether or not the new-ish Dolce & Gabbana and CK Calvin Klein (the latest Klein incarnation) makeup lines are going to make it.

Burberry does have one advantage, though. Die-hard fans will buy anything with the iconic plaid, and we predict a plaid lipstick tube would be a smash hit.

Winter Fashion – Paris Style

October 23, 2009

Winter Fashion CollectionThe British have always had a sneaking suspicion that the French are better dressed than them – a view with which the French entirely concur – and nowhere is this more apparent than the ongoing obsession with what Vogue terms ‘La Parisienne… the season’s fashion darling… autumn’s chicest muse’.

It’s a style with a powerful pedigree – Françoise Hardy, Catherine Deneuve, Brigitte Bardot – and depends upon Breton striped tops, and pristine white blouses beneath perfectly tailored black jackets, and trousers or a pencil skirt. You’ll find plenty of these in the current winter collections, and versions thereof on the high street, based on a predominantly monochrome palette of black, white, grey and navy. Given that the fashion originated with French couturiers – Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent and, above all, Coco Chanel – its revival in the Paris shows should come as no surprise. Karl Lagerfeld somehow manages to reinvent the components on a regular basis: this winter, there are ruffled white collars and frothy cuffs on poised black suits; all of them eminently covetable, as are John Galliano’s fitted grey jackets at Dior.

This is not necessarily a slouchy look – although Coco Chanel’s fluid jersey pieces have been given the film-star treatment in Audrey Tautou’s portrayal of the ultimate gamine in Coco Avant Chanel (and I defy anyone not to want a striped loose sailor top and trousers after seeing Tautou). But Christian Dior’s iconic corseted New Look was established as a key element of French dressing more than 60 years ago, and as Nancy Mitford observed in a letter to a friend, written in 1948, the British version never really came up to scratch. ‘Oh the dowdiness of English women,’ she complained, having returned to her beloved Paris after a visit to London. ‘Has it always been the same or are they worse now – I can’t remember. It is so fundamental that I suspect the former. The London New Look made me die of laughing – literal chintz crinolines. Apparently Dior went over [to England] and when he realised it was he who had started the look, he was ready to commit suicide.’

But before anyone accuses me of being unpatriotic, there are quintessentially British takes on La Parisienne with a wit and charm all of their own. I’m thinking here of Bella Freud’s idiosyncratic jumpers; including one of my favourites, in plain black wool, with je t’aime jane embroidered in white cursive script on the front, and gainsbourg is god on the back. As a tongue-in-cheek homage they can’t be bettered; heroine-worship as good as it gets.

Haute Couture At Risk Again?

October 20, 2009

Paris Fashion Style CollectionIt seems everybody is cutting costs these days — even the fashion industry’s loftiest names.

Unfortunately, the first on the chopping block are also the most skilled: France’s “petite mains,” the specialized fashion artisans who are integral in the making of haute couture garments.

These embroiderers, seamstresses, tailors and milliners give haute couture fashion its high-quality finish (and hefty price tag).

But the profession is a dying one, shrinking by 80% since 2007 as fashion houses like Chanel, Azzaro and Christian Dior outsource their production.

As a result, these small businesses are appealing to the French government for help, reports the Wall Street Journal.

Do we smell a fashion bailout?

Chanel has smartly bought up several of the failing artisan houses — presumably helping Karl Lagerfeld keep his haute couture edge — but the industry is still in trouble.

Now, the French government is stepping in, hosting a meeting today with officials, industry executives and artisans to talk about tax breaks and new labeling procedures designed to highlight the craftsmanship of each piece, says the source.
